Psalm 93

American West

Today, I would like to share the encouragement of Psalm 93. This is another psalm that may be quick and easy to memorize, because it is only 5 verses long. This passage is an excellent reminder of the Heavenly Father’s fortitude.

Verse 1 begins with a description of the Lord’s splendor.

The Lord reigns! He is robed in majesty;
The Lord is robed, enveloped in strength.
The world is firmly established;
it cannot be shaken.

Webster’s Dictionary defines “majesty” as “sovereign power, authority, or dignity…used in addressing or referring to reigning sovereigns and their consorts… royal bearing or aspect GRANDEUR… greatness or splendor of quality or character.” Christ is mighty and He cannot be removed from His throne. The word “established” is defined as, “accepted and recognized or followed by many people established rules/customs/traditions… successful for a long period of time and widely known… b: growing or flourishing successfully…of a church or religion : officially recognized and accepted by the government of a country.” This flows into verse 2.

Your throne has been established
from the beginning;
You are from eternity.

Verse 3 notes the sea and its waves, consistently beating the shore.

The floods have lifted up, Lord,
the floods have lifted up their voice;
the floods lift up their pounding waves.

Renée Cho from Columbia Climate School wrote in Tapping Into Ocean Power that “The constant pounding of the waves and the ebb and flow of tidal currents, as well as other properties of the ocean, if harnessed, could produce 20,000 to 80,000 terawatt hours of electricity, according to the International Energy Agency. That is more than the world’s current energy consumption of almost 20,000 TWh” (Cho, 2017).

Verse 4 continues with a further description of something stronger than the overwhelming power of the ocean.

Greater than the roar of many waters—
the mighty breakers of the sea—
the Lord on high is majestic.

The final verse of Psalm 93 closes with a reminder of the firmness, reliability and consistency of the Lord’s holiness.

Lord, Your testimonies are completely reliable;
holiness is the beauty of Your house
for all the days to come.

Christ will be with His followers through good and bad times for all of our days. We will never really be alone.
