Yesterday, I read Psalm 98. It’s a short, but joyous passage with just 9 verses.
Sing a new song to the Lord,
For He has done wonderful things,
His right hand and His holy arm have gained the victory for Him.
The Lord has made His salvation known;
He has revealed His righteousness in the sight of the nations.
He has remembered His graciousness and His faithfulness to the house of Israel;
All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.
Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth;
Be cheerful and sing for joy and sing praises.
Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre,
With the lyre and the sound of melody.
With trumpets and the sound of the horn
Shout joyfully before the King, the Lord.
May the sea roar and all it contains,
The world and those who dwell in it.
May the rivers clap their hands,
May the mountains sing together for joy
Before the Lord, for He is coming to judge the earth;
He will judge the world with righteousness
And the peoples with fairness.
The psalmist begins by thanking the Lord for His righteousness and grace. It’s helpful to do this when times are difficult. His constant presence is what brings us moments of calm – He protects us when we are in danger.
We can call out to Him at any time, and He will hear us. This hearkens back to Psalm 5:2-4.
Listen to the sound of my cry for help, my King and my God,
For to You I pray.
In the morning, Lord, You will hear my voice;
In the morning I will present my prayer to You and be on the watch.
For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness;
No evil can dwell with You.
Continuing with Psalm 98 though, praising the Lord is compared to the power of the sea’s roar. Joyful, but but full of power and fairness – joy is a powerfully positive thing.
